I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving. Black Friday sales scare me, so I usually stay cozy at home instead of attempting to hit the stores. I’m excited to share this new cocktail recipe with you guys – the Rum Buck. I’ve never had this drink before I was introduced to it through my Amber Rum Box from Shaker & Spoon.
The Rum Buck is one of three cocktail recipes from the Amber Rum Box. Check out the first cocktail recipe I posted for the Rum Smash here. The Rum Buck turned out to be my favorite cocktail in the box. It’s delicious, refreshing and I love the color- a perfect cocktail for entertaining.
The Rum Buck is made with hibiscus syrup, which gives it this vibrant magenta color. It just makes me so happy. Fall brings some of my favorite foods – roasted veggies, mushroom gravy, lentil curry, sweet potatoes… but all of those dishes don’t have the prettiest color palette on a table. The Rum Buck is a nice diversion from your typical brown Fall colors. It’s great that this drink is delicious, but I’d love to serve this cocktail at my next holiday dinner simply because it adds prettiness to the table.
Here are the ingredients:
- 1/4 oz hibiscus syrup
- 2 oz ginger beer
- 2 kaffir lime leaves
- 3/4 oz lime juice (juice about one lime)
- 2 oz rum
Kaffir lime leaves… this is exactly why I LOVE the Shaker & Spoon subscription box. Because I would otherwise have no idea where to pick up kaffir lime leaves. Instead, the only ingredient I had to get was the rum. The leaves were so fragrant and you can tell they added some real flavor to the drink. Definitely not something you should exclude or substitute. The leaves came vacuum sealed in the Amber Rum box, and I actually had them in my fridge for days before using them. It was pretty impressive how the perishable ingredients were packed in the box so that they retain their optimum freshness and flavor when you’re ready to use them.
The Rum Buck is a drink that gets muddled and rolled. Rolled meaning you mix the drink by adding the ingredients into one glass and then pouring it all into another. You do this instead of shaking so that your drink doesn’t get too diluted with ice. You can learn all the different techniques here.
Here’s how you mix the drink:
- Add the lime leaves and syrup to a shaker. Muddle for 6 seconds.
- Add the remaining ingredients to the shaker.
- Roll into a collins glass (which is a taller, skinnier glass) filled with ice.
- Serve with a straw if desired. I added extra lime slices because I love citrus in my drinks.
Isn’t it gorgeous? Makes you wonder what else you can put hibiscus syrup into. I hope you guys get to try out the Rum Buck recipe, especially if you’re planning to engage in a full day of Black Friday shopping.
